In the tech world, sometimes you come across a little tale that’s simply a great read. Nothing shocking or revelatory, just… well… nice. And one perfect example of this is a brief post on X by Dave Plummer, a programmer who worked at Microsoft for many years. While there, though unrelated to his job, he wrote the code that enabled Zip file support in Windows, and somewhat ironically, he also paid the licence fee for WinRAR.
The proof for this seemingly unlikely tale was presented by Plummer himself and he indicates that the email receipt comes from around 2003, which is roughly when he finished his ten-year career at Microsoft. Certain Affinity, which has worked as a support studio on games including Halo Infinite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, New World, and Hogwarts Legacy, has announced that it is laying off 25 employees, representing roughly 10% of the studio’s workforce.
Word of the layoffs came in a message from founder and CEO Max Hoberman (via Eurogamer), who said it was the first time employees at the studio have been laid off since Certain Affinity was founded in 2006. Hoberman said the game industry as a whole has faced “unprecedented challenges” over the past year, and that multiple factors played a role in the decision to let people go.
“Most significant is an industry-wide slow down in the funding of new lead and co-development projects and the reluctance of third party investors to fund games or game companies,” Hoberman wrote. “This has made it exceptionally difficult to sign new work or secure other forms of funding.”

It was widely seen as a triumph when the PvP dungeon crawler Dark and Darker arrived in a surprise early access launch earlier this week, but some of that initial thrill has given way to widespread criticism of the game’s microtransactions. Numerous fans have taken issue with developer Ironmace’s decision to sell additional character classes and races through Dark and Darker’s in-game store—and the pushback has been strong enough that the studio is considering changing course.
“I think I can speak for a majority that buying classes is not what we want in a Buy to Play game,” redditor BarnacleLanky wrote yesterday. “Cosmetics? Cool. Provisions? Please define. Classes? Hard no.”

A potentially scary, though difficult to implement side-channel attack that could allow malicious websites to read and extract sensitive data has broken cover. The vulnerability affects all GPU manufacturers across devices ranging from PCs, to laptops and phones.
According to a paper released by researchers from four American universities (via Ars Technica), the so-called GPU.zip attack relates to GPU compression data. This is proprietary so it would require a hacker to have a deep knowledge of GPU compression algorithms, which are closed in nature and would require reverse engineering. That’s no mean feat for a start.

It works by visiting a website with embedded iframe HTML elements. No Man’s Sky has been spitting out cosmic adventures for seven years and, despite not meeting expectations at launch, has evolved into an incredibly varied sandbox thanks to Hello Games’ fantastic post-launch support. With free, expansion-sized updates coming out every year, it keeps beckoning players back.
This month, according to Hello Games founder Sean Murray, is actually its “biggest” in the last few years, despite competition from the long-awaited Starfield, another sandbox that ticks a lot of the same boxes.
This is across all platforms, says Murray, but on Steam alone it’s had its best month since September 2021, and one of its best months overall. It’s quite the achievement for a game of this age. It’s worth noting that its largest update of the year arrived in late August, followed by a new Expedition at the start of this month, so both of these things are major contributing factors.
