Update 13/10/2023: Activision Blizzard is officially a Microsoft company. Lightning fast, Microsoft has moved to close the deal after getting the nod from the UK CMA, announcing a grand welcome to “the Legendary Teams at Activision Blizzard King” in a post on the Xbox blog. 

In an email to Activision employees uploaded to the Microsoft news site, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick announced that “Phil [Spencer] has asked me to stay on as CEO of ABK, reporting to him, and we have agreed that I will do that through the end of 2023,” after which a new, Kotick-less era will begin at the company.

In the tech world, sometimes you come across a little tale that’s simply a great read. Nothing shocking or revelatory, just… well… nice. And one perfect example of this is a brief post on X by Dave Plummer, a programmer who worked at Microsoft for many years. While there, though unrelated to his job, he wrote the code that enabled Zip file support in Windows, and somewhat ironically, he also paid the licence fee for WinRAR.

The proof for this seemingly unlikely tale was presented by Plummer himself and he indicates that the email receipt comes from around 2003, which is roughly when he finished his ten-year career at Microsoft. During that time, he worked on a variety of projects within the software giant, with his most notable contribution being something he actually developed as a side project at home: Task Manager.

Certain Affinity, which has worked as a support studio on games including Halo Infinite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, New World, and Hogwarts Legacy, has announced that it is laying off 25 employees, representing roughly 10% of the studio’s workforce.

Word of the layoffs came in a message from founder and CEO Max Hoberman (via Eurogamer), who said it was the first time employees at the studio have been laid off since Certain Affinity was founded in 2006. Hoberman said the game industry as a whole has faced “unprecedented challenges” over the past year, and that multiple factors played a role in the decision to let people go.

“Most significant is an industry-wide slow down in the funding of new lead and co-development projects and the reluctance of third party investors to fund games or game companies,” Hoberman wrote. “This has made it exceptionally difficult to sign new work or secure other forms of funding.”

It was widely seen as a triumph when the PvP dungeon crawler Dark and Darker arrived in a surprise early access launch earlier this week, but some of that initial thrill has given way to widespread criticism of the game’s microtransactions. Numerous fans have taken issue with developer Ironmace’s decision to sell additional character classes and races through Dark and Darker’s in-game store—and the pushback has been strong enough that the studio is considering changing course.

“I think I can speak for a majority that buying classes is not what we want in a Buy to Play game,” redditor BarnacleLanky wrote yesterday. “Cosmetics? Cool. Provisions? Please define. Classes? Hard no.”

BarnacleLanky acknowledged that the in-game currency used to purchase new classes can be earned through gameplay, but “the current rate of earning is abysmally low,” they said. “So if Ironmace wants to keep this system, then let’s talk about adjusting the rate of earning to be more real…

A potentially scary, though difficult to implement side-channel attack that could allow malicious websites to read and extract sensitive data has broken cover. The vulnerability affects all GPU manufacturers across devices ranging from PCs, to laptops and phones.

According to a paper released by researchers from four American universities (via Ars Technica), the so-called GPU.zip attack relates to GPU compression data. This is proprietary so it would require a hacker to have a deep knowledge of GPU compression algorithms, which are closed in nature and would require reverse engineering. That’s no mean feat for a start.

A malicious website can then use a cross-origin SVG (scalable vector graphics) filter to read the pixels displayed by another website.  It works by visiting a website with embedded iframe HTML elements. The iframe links to the cross-origin webpage allowing a hacker to extract information as it appears on the screen, one pixel at a time.

In a recent earnings report, Blizzard celebrated Diablo 4’s meteoric rise as its highest-earning game of all time, even while community sentiment around the latest patch hasn’t been stellar. 

The report itself celebrates this over the span of four bullet points, even noting that net bookings for Diablo: Immortal have been at the “highest level since January.” Overwatch 2 only gets one bullet point, presumably as punishment.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the few RPGs rich in evil options where I actually stuck to mostly heroic deeds in my first playthrough. But I’m doing my total scumbag run at the moment, which means the news that Larian’s working on some more evil endings is music to my ears. 

Chatting to IGN, CEO Swen Vincke teased some of what the studio’s got planned for us before it bids farewell to the Forgotten Realms for good—specifically, more campaign conclusions for evil-inclined adventurers.

“So they’re working on the evil endings right now,” Vincke said. “I’ve seen some of them. They’re really evil. So the evil players will be satisfied with that.”
